We got to play with/babysit some cousins a little over a week ago. I believe Jason and Shalee are coming to expect pictures of their kids whenever they come over, so here are a couple for you.
Topic #2: We had cucumbers coming out of our ears. Chloe wanted to make pickles, but that project was overwhelming me. We had several cucumbers go bad just waiting for me to figure out how to pickle them. In the meantime I decided relish would be more useful. We actually use that -- we don't usually eat pickles. So, I finally got to work and made some relish! It took all day, and I didn't really have the right tools (I wanted to make sure canning is really something I want to do before making the investment), but it worked out. I actually haven't tried any of it yet, but Brandon has and said it's pretty good.
The next day I was busy baking. I had a bunch of raspberries I'd gotten at the farmer's market that I was trying to use up. Since I'd finally figured out the whole canning thing, I thought I could try some freezer jam. Holy cow was that easy! Now I just feel dumb for not doing it sooner. When our peaches are ready I'm excited to try peach jam.
Topic #3: The Davis County Fair
This year we really didn't have time to spend at the fair, but we still managed to fit a few activities in (very rushed!) To start with: Sophie had grown a watermelon that she had planned to enter in the fair. When she first got her seed we were a little skeptical that it would be ready in time for the fair, but she got a pretty decent sized melon. When we turned her entry in, the judges or whoever that is taking the entries were so great with her. They made her feel so special. We had to go back the next day to see what ribbon she got -- not only did she get a blue ribbon (first place), but she also won Best of Division! This girl has been on cloud 9 ever since. She's pretty proud of her watermelon. Now both girls are planning what they're going to enter next year. I think the prize money has got them fired up.
We had to go back to the fair again the following day. I would have preferred to just do it all in one trip, but Sophie was too excited to go see what she had won with her melon the day before, and the pie eating contest wasn't until Thursday. So we made two trips. They only choose 8 participants per age group (under 7, 8-12, and over 13), and their are a lot more people who'd like to participate so they pull names from a box. This just seemed to be our year. Chloe got chosen! But then she got scared and didn't want to go, so Sophie took her place. She didn't win, but she got to bring home her chocolate cream pie and got a certificate for a free meal at Marie Calendars for participating.
After that we had to head over to the Davis Reads booth to turn in our list of books they'd read this summer to get a free ride. They also were handing out free books! And not just crappy books, really good classics! Sophie chose "Pollyanna" and Chloe got "Little Men." Then we went and rode the rides. Sophie ended up getting to go twice on her ride, just to add to her stroke of luck she seemed to have.
When we were there on Wednesday to check on the melon we stopped by the kids tent and got balloon animals. That's a tradition. Chloe got a mouse (yes, I know it looks more like a dog), and you have no doubt that Sophie asked for a bear, right?
Topic#4: Erin
I found on on Wednesday that my cousin who lives in North Carolina was going to be in town. Even though I felt like I had a hundred things going on I was able to squeeze in a visit. She was here for a "Dress Your Truth" convention, and invited me to come to a girl's night out event. Even though it was pretty short, I'm glad I got to go visit with her for a bit, and I got to meet the newest addition to their family.

Seeing you was one of the best parts of my trip. Thanks so much for taking the time out to see me! I will let you know next time I come to town, and maybe we can spend a little more time chatting together!
